William Owen Welsh Language Dictionary 1803 Coelbren definition - 'A piece of wood used in shoosing or balloting, wherupon wa cut the name of he candidate; a lot. Coelbren y Bierdd, alphabet of the bards. This was the original alphabet of the Britons, which was cut across the surface of a square piece of wood, being their way of writing, that is still perceived by a few of the descendants of the Bards. Coelbren y mynaic, or the monkish alphabet, being the roman letters, adapted for cutting, in a similar manner.'
From the introduction to the dictionary it can be seen that roman letters refers to modern alpha-numerics.
