In Wales Joseph of Arimathea is known as Ilid, Ilid Sant or St. Ilid.
Ilid was known to be a man from the Holy Land - Israel. He was certainly not a native of Wales. He is credited with having brought Christianity to Wales in the first century, long before it was spread around the middle east and Europe.
In Mid Glamorgan there is a village by the name of Llanilid. Welsh place names which begin with "Llan" are usually named after saints. For example Llandudno is named after St Tudno (The "t" mutates to a "d"), Llanddewi is named after St Dewi ("d" mutating to "dd") (and that's another interesting story - who indeed was Dewi? That will be covered elsewhere.), Llangybi - St Cybi, Llanalhaearn - St Alhaearn etc.
There are churches in many parts of Wales dedicated to St Ilid.
So, who was Ilid?
Some scholars claim that Ilid, among a group of others which included Caradog, Cyllin and Eigen brought Christianity to Britain from Rome but this is hardly plausible when it can be seen that Ilid was here with the Holy Family years before Christianity spread to Rome.
